Describe the aspects of blood tranfusions and its possible complications.?

Blood type & match: A blood transfusion can mean several types of infusions (iv administration of fluids) for different problems. Whole blood, packed red cells, platelets. All require blood typing (abo & rh) & then matching with recipient blood. This is done just before the transfusion. Complications can be incompatibility (mismatch of different types due to minor blood groups) or contamination from donor or infuser.

Part 2 Tx: Incompatibility can be minor-itching, hives, edema (swelling); or more severe-respiratory difficulty, drop in blood pressure, shock, clotting difficulties. Or lethal - serum sickness & death. Contamination can occur anywhere the blood is handled. It most often occurs when the donor has an infection that is transmitted to the recipient such as hiv, hepatitis, fungi, or parasites.
