If i start having contractions before 34 weeks, can progesterone delay the birth?

No: Progesterone is used for prevention of preterm labor in a limited group of women. The only situation in which it has been found to be successful is in women with a history of preterm birth who are currently pregnant with just 1 baby. It should be started between 16-20 weeks. Contractions are normal up to 6/hr after 34 weeks. Decreasing activity may help to decrease their frequency or pain.

No: There are lots of news stories out now about the use of Progesterone to prevent preterm delivery. It is started in the 2nd trimester in women with a previous preterm delivery. It does not work to stop preterm labor in someone currently experiencing it.
