Severity: Shock refers to low blood pressure, one of the major problems with low blood pressure is that there is decreased perfusion to the brain which can cause permanent brain damage. We usually try to keep patients awake if they are in shock, because if they are sleepy or unconscious it is a sign of poor brain perfusion.
