How long would a kidney transplant surgery take?

2-4 hours in general: Of course there are many factors that determine the length of any surgery - complexity of the anatomy, previous surgeries, size of the patient, risks of bleeding, to name a few. However, for a first time kidney transplant in a normal sized person, the average time is 2-4 hours from start to finish. There will be extra time to go to sleep at the start, prepare the patient, and to wake up after.

3 - 4 hours: Is not a type of surgery to be rushed. Sometimes problems can be encountered which will prolong surgery, e.G if there are two renal arteries on the donor kidney, or if one or both native kidneys in recipient need to be removed coincident with transplant.
