Choices: Despite the difficulties, expense and hard work, you are much better off caring for your current organs with your diabetes. If you end up with damaged kidneys despite your best diabetes care efforts, then you can rest assured you can care for your new transplanted organs, (also a lot of work, difficulties and expense). Find a diabetes support group, get involved in your care. Good luck.

2-4 hours in general: Of course there are many factors that determine the length of any surgery - complexity of the anatomy, previous surgeries, size of the patient, risks of bleeding, to name a few. However, for a first time kidney transplant in a normal sized person, the average time is 2-4 hours from start to finish. There will be extra time to go to sleep at the start, prepare the patient, and to wake up after.

3 - 4 hours: Is not a type of surgery to be rushed. Sometimes problems can be encountered which will prolong surgery, e.G if there are two renal arteries on the donor kidney, or if one or both native kidneys in recipient need to be removed coincident with transplant.

Probably 2-5 hours..: The surgical time of kidney transplant may highly vary depending upon team work, surgeon's experience and skill, anatomical variation of the transplanted kidney, etc. For detail, ask surgeon directly.
