Typical causes: The most common scenario is the use of a diuretic ("fluid" pill stimulating urine production) which both causes weight loss (from fluid loss) and wasting of potassium. A rare cause is cushing's disease but this usually causes weight gain. Diuretics are typically given for heart, kidney, and liver disease and to treat high blood pressure.
