Is it proper to remove the dead, peeling skin from around a wound? will this hurt it more or cause infection?

Exfoliate : It is okay to wash your wound and gently exfoliate with a wash cloth. Okay to use mild soap. Do not use any sharp or cutting techniques. Okay to check in with your doc or wound care center.

Yes: If it is done very carefully so as not to harm the healthy skin this can actually help reduce your risk of infection because it is easier to clean and control bacteria from healthy skin next to the wound.

Done by the doc: Wounds often are debrided of all non viable tissues. Some may apply a topical anesthetic prior to debridement.
