Many but safe: General anesthesia is very safe now days with proper monitoring. There is risk of aspiration (food going down your airway) if you don't fast before the anesthetic so make sure you don't have breakfast before surgery. Finger nail polish can also make it more difficult to read your pulse oximetry (oxygen level).

Low for ASA PS 1: Undetected, underlying cardiac issues, & also hidden drug abuse can increase your risks. A young healthy person - asa ps 1 - then risks are super low. Anesthetics or sedation medications involve the very rare potential of risks & complications such as damage to vital organs like the brain, heart, lungs, liver & kidneys; paralysis; cardiac arrest; &/or death from both known & unknown causes.

Minimal: There are some risks associated with general anesthesia, but they are minimal. The risk of dying under anesthesia is about one in 350, 000. It is much more likely that a patient will die driving to the hospital for their surgery. Other risks, including nausea and vomiting and poor pain control can be managed by a trained anesthesiologist. Increased risk with the sicker patient. Good luck.

Very safe: The risks of modern anesthesia are minimal. The chance of a healthy 16 year old dying is almost zero.
