A member asked:

Would you recommend surgery to remove ss instrumentation from 12 yr old lumbar fusion to get an mri so that adjacent segment disease can be addressed?

Probably not: Usually, instrumentation is only removed because it is a source of pain, especially after a non-union. To have surgery only to see if an MRI identifies adjacent disease seems pretty extreme. If you have concern about adjacent level disease, there are other tests besides mri's that may help you with your answer. If more surgery is necessary, instrumentation can be removed at that time.

See below: Talk to your surgeon. There may be other radiographic techniques (such as a myelogram) that may not require the removal of the instrumentation. Your surgeon can best discuss these options with you.
