A 27-year-old female asked:

can zoonotic diseases from dogs be cured? or do they stay with you forever?

Curable: Except for rabies caught late they should be curable!
Dr. Angela Walker
Addiction Medicine 42 years experience
Zoonotics: There is a difference between being infected and being diseased. An infection means there is a "bug" that lives in the host (you) but does not necessarily cause symptoms (that is what it meant by disease). So, yes, a disease from a dog can be cured. It also depends on the type of zoonotic.

My dog just passed and i'm worried i'll relapse and have a drink, how can I stop myself?

Get help: Do things to take your mind off alcohol. Drink at least 5 cups of water a day. Tell your family and friends that you are worried about a relapse, so they can support you & so they don't try to give you alcohol either. Maybe keep a journal where you write a good bye letter to your dog to let out some of your grief. It's ok to grieve when someone you love dies.

How long can I expect to be mourning the loss of my dog?

Depends: Everyone heals a a different rate. With the loss of any loved one, pet included, time and support is what is needed.A support group may help , and as one heals some positive actions would be volunteering with a local pet shelter or vet as a tribute to the adored pet. As time passes, all of the wonderful memories with that pet will help the healing.
A 37-year-old member asked:

Is it normal to feel as though i've lost a family member with the passing of my dog?

Yes: For most of us our animals are family. We want them enough to bring them into our homes, care for them under all circumstances, go through the growing pains they all have and love their quirks and personalities. In return they give us unending affection in spite of the frustration and scolding we show at times. It's no wonder then that when they are gone there is a very empty spot in our heart.
A 43-year-old member asked:

If bitten by a stray dog, what do you do first?

Dr. Alfredo Garcia

Dog bite: First, wash the wound well with soap and water and apply antibiotic. Secondly, investigate the immunization record of the dog especially against rabies. If it was a stray dog or the status of the dog's Rabies Vaccine has expired, it's important for him to receive rabies Immune Globulin and start rabies vaccination. The easiest thing to do is visit your nearest hospital's ed.
A 36-year-old member asked:

Why do I like to just hang out with my dog during school breaks?

Dr. Peter Kurzweil
Internal Medicine 50 years experience
Cause it feels good: A dog's love is unconditional, safe, fuzzy, warm, reassuring that you are loved. Playing or interacting or eating with others at school can be scary, one can be made fun of for almost anything that doesn't fit their concept of 'fitting in'. Take some chances, mstart with someone it feels safe with. Each experience that is positive, reinforces and gives you incentive for the next. Courage, boy.
