Probably: A crown is placed to replace decay and or old fillings to give the tooth maximum life. It is designed to restore the tooth to normal form and function, therefore sufficient tooth structure must be removed to allow a natural size and shape for the crown.

Not necessarily: It depends on if your tooth is decayed, or if a slight reduction is necessary for a more esthetic restoration.
