Most often not: Functional ovarian cysts don't need treatment and often go away on their own in 6 - 12 weeks. If you have frequent cysts, birth control pills can be prescribed to reduce the risk of new cysts. Rarely, surgery may be needed to remove the cyst or ovary to make sure its not cancer. Complex ovarian cysts & cysts causing symptoms that don't go away plus very large cysts are often surgically removed.
