As needed: Trazadone is actually an antidepressant, but only in very high doses. Sedation is a side effect even in low doses and not necessary to take regularly when used for insomnia. In fact regular use may lead to tolerance of sedative effect. Usually best to take it an hour or 2 before you plan to go to sleep. Some people do get a hangover feeling the next morning.
