Swelling: Toe swelling can be caused by many things. If there is drainage or pus, this may be either an ingrown nail or infection. However, it sounds like it's just swelling. Although gout (uric acid excess) can occur in the big toe joint, it's less likely in females unless you are past menopause. You should be fine, but if continues, see a podiatrist. Gout?: While a high uric acid is suggestive of gout, the most conclusive diagnostic feature would be to draw off fluid from the joint and check for negatively birefringent crystals. If found, your symptoms are likely gout and should respond to oral or injectable steroids and chronic uric acid management.
