62 yo m, about 2 months ago my hip started aching, seems to be getting worse. pain is usually local to the joint, but some radiation. arthritis?

Hip/back/bursa: Hip pain generally causes pain in the groin and can radiate to the thigh, your pain could be coming from your hip (arthritis, tendonitis). Pain on the outer upper thighs could be pain from bursitis . Your pain may also be referred pain from your lumbar spine. See your doctor for a thorough exam, xrays etc.

Could be: It could be although frequently when people point to their "hips" by putting there hand in back, they are often dealing with their lower back. Hip pain usually causes groin pain although hip bursitis can be found on the outside of the upper thigh. All in all you should see a doctor who specializes in this area. Usually an orthopedist or a physiatrist or a sports medicine specialist.
