Cost/side fx aside, which ssri would be the best to try first for extreme gad/hypochondriasis? since they all take awhile, i wanna start w/ the best.

THE BEST: The best is the one that works. Even better is one like that without side effects (for you). Cymbalta has had a lot of study and lots of use - generally works. Also sertraline. And with all of them you have to titrate up to the dose that works. Fluoxetine tends to work very quickly and the right dose and has the advantage of a 2 wk 1/2 life - that makes rebound reactions less likely when you stop.

All the same: They are all the same. There's some data that Effexor (venlafaxine) (an snri, not ssri) may have quicker onset of action.
