Many options: This sounds like some sort of anterior orbital infection. These can be very serious and can threaten the vision if the infection breaks through the barriers and gets behind the eye. The condition is more ominous if you are a diabetic. You should see your ophthalmologist or an er as soon as possible.

Conjunctivitis: Bacterial conjunctivitis is the leading contender on the long differential, but unilateral viral keratoconjunctivitis, preseptal cellulitis, allergic conjunctivitis and even iritis are possibilities. Try soothing the eye with a moist chamomile tea bag, and if the eye is not getting better, see an ophthalmologist. Go emergently if nauseated, have blurred vision or see colored haloes around lights.
