Blisters/ Cold Sore: Most likely not. But, remember all sexually active adults need the blood test to diagnose their history in regards to herpes. He may need medication to break the cycle of his oral herpes outbreak. You need to know if have ever been exposed to herpes. Most americans get oral herpes from their family as children.

Possible: The possibility is herpes type one or type two -- but it usually goes away, but can last a couple of weeks. Sounds like time for both of you to see a physician, sooner rather than later.
