Canker sore: Go to the pharmacy and get some ointment to cover the lesion it will make you so much more comfortable if that doesn't help see your dentist.

Viral or bacterial: Common cause can be a break in the protective surface allowing normal mouth bacteria into the tissue. This is called aphthous ulcer. Another common cause is viral. Normal cold sore virus is herpes simplex. They hurt but should resolve in 7 to 10 days. Other types of infection are possible and should be ruled out with a detailed personal lifestyle and medical history by a physician.
