Rib fracture : Rib fractures can be quite painful and literally take the breath out of you for a while. It can take many months and sometimes a year before the pain subsides. In case of a traumatic rib fracture, injury to superimposed body parts should also be assessed for. Nsaids in combination with topical analgesics may provide great relief. A nerve block may often take the pain away for good.

Neuralgia : The rib lies over a nerve that wraps from your spine to the front of your chest. If the pain follows this pattern you may have intercostal neuralgia which can be treated in multiple ways. On the other hand, if you continue to have only back pain, you should have your spine evaluated. There are many possibilities for the cause of your pain. Good luck.
