With the current : Epidemic of childhood obesity, i prefer not to introduce sugary foods or liquids. Of course, if such food items are completely forbidden, they may become a source of curiosity. I'd wait until a child can understand that a lollipop is a special treat for dessert after a festive meal & that (s)he has to brush his/her teeth after eating one at the dinner table, ~ age 5-6 years.
