Emergency contracept: There are three products on the market approved by the fda as emergency contraceptives: Plan B one-step®, next choice® and ella®. All emergency contraceptives are more effective the earlier they are used and should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse, within 72 hours. The first 2 are available otc by those age 15 and over and by prescription for those under 17.

Prevention: Occurs prior to sex. Latex condoms with spermicide would be ideal.

EC: Emergency contraception, like plan b, is effective for preventing pregnancy when used within 72 hours of unprotected intercourse. You can pick it up at many local pharmacies.
