Inflamed brainstem: This is a rare type of encephalitis thought to be due to the immune system attacking brain cells (ie. Autoimmune). It preferentially affects the lower part of the brain called the brainstem responsible for facial movements, speech, swallowing, eye movements, and the cerebellum which is responsible for coordination. Arms and legs are also affected. Mri, csf, and blood anti-q1b help with diagnosis.
