can gastric problems mimic heart problems and if so, what types of problems can cause it? i have a clean bill of health regarding my heart.

You bet!: Happens all the time. Gastitis, acid reflux, peptic ulcer disease, cholecystits, esophagitis and esophageal spasm are all typical condtions that mimic heart disease.
