A member asked:

My 3 yr old has moderate chest congestion, after having a mild fever a few days ago. fever gone. how long is ok with congestion before taking to dr?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Be patient, mom!: As long as your child is not asthmatic, viral upper respiratory infections (aka colds) resolve in about 2 weeks. Try honey, mentholated rubs and delsym (dextromethorphan) for cough relief, but avoid otc cold symptom relievers. Red flags: return of fever, marked lethargy or unusual irritability, audible wheezing or marked difficulty breathing.
