Sudden collapse: It can be due to a number of different causes, including medications, possibly causing postural hypotension, cardiac causes, and neurological causes among other things. It could have been due to dehydration because of uncontrolled diabetes. Please make sure he is seen by a physician.

Syncope: By that description syncope i.e. Low blood supply to brain is very likely and need to be investigated to prevent catastrophe. Do not ignore to see doctor soon.
