RSI: In general epidural steroid injections are safe. This is very relative. You want to have failed conservative management such as physical therapy and anti-inflammatory eps (if safe/prescribed) before considering esis. Also duration of pain and quality/character. More well defined pain radiating from back into limb would increase likelihood of effectiveness.

Safe: A walking epidural refers to a low dose continuously running local anesthetic in the epidural space that provides pain relief but preserves motor function and allows patients to still walk (like during labor). Single shot epidural steroid injections are for patients with back pain that radiates down one or both extremities from a disk herniation. Procedures are safe but have risks.
