Toxic or transient: Synovitis, inflammation of the lining of the hip joint, is a common cause of limping up to 10 yrs. It often follows a "cold" & is transient. X-rays, lab-work & other studies are done to rule out more serious causes, especially if fever or other symptoms co-exist. Toddler's fracture, a spiral, oblique undisplaced fracture of the distal tibia, is seen on only ~ 50% of initial x-rays.

Many diff. fractures: Toddler fractures that cause limp are not always obvious. Examination radiographically should include femur, tibia, and foot. Fractures are not unusual in toddlers in foot, calcaneus, first metatarsal. Pain can also from hip when joint effusion. Usually examine pelvis as well. Sometimes casted when not obvious then reexamined in few weeks.
