Hyperthyroidism: If your thyroid disease is hyperthyroidism, you could easily lose 20 pounds. Your thyroid gland regulates your metabolic rate (simplistically, how fast or slow you burn calories). You you are hyperthyroid you are going to burn calories faster than normal and that can cause weight loss. The opposite is also true, if you are hypothyroid, you can gain weight because you aren't burning the calories.
