HOCM: I believe you are describing hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. The abbreviation, hocm, is sometimes spoken like "hokem". In this condition the septum, a portion of the ventricle or pumping chamber of the heart, becomes abnormally thick and blood flow out of the heart is obstructed. This can cause shortness of breath or even fainting.
