Biopsy: Cancer might be suspected or considered based on a patients symptoms and imaging, such as x-rays, CT scan or MRI. If there is a specific area on imaging that either looks like it may represent cancer, or raises a reasonable possiblity, then a biopsy followed by microscopic evaluation of the cells must be performed by a pathologist to get a definitive diagnosis of cancer and the specific type.
