Sometimes: Routine lasik surgery is not covered by most insurance plans. Lasik surgery to correct refractive errors secondary to other eye surgery (such as a corneal transplant) or if there is such a large difference in the prescription between your 2 eyes that you cannot tolerate this imbalance, could be considered medically necessary. Your surgeon would need to assist getting it covered.

Rarely: Lasik is rarely medically necessary as defined by the insurance companies. Many patients consider lasik necessary if they become intolerant of contact lenses and find glasses a problem.

Us military: The us military considers lasik and prk refractive surgery to be necessary for its servicemen on duty. Because of this they might be the largest suppliers of these procedures in the us and perhaps the world. This is neccxessary from a duty standpoint of course. Otherwise it is a personal choice.
