It can happen...: Unfortunately, it can happen even after 30 years of being smoke free. That's why smoking is so bad for you, and the best way to prevent lung cancer is to never have had smoked in the first place.

Statistical: Risk is not different that those than never smoked if you quit before 34 years of age, but even non-smokers can get it. I grew up near newark, and have the same history you relate. I wish us luck!
