For what reasons might alcoholism not just be called an addiction like smoking or doing drugs?

It is: Alcoholism is an addiction. To doctors the word alcoholism ignites a heightened sense of alertness as withdrawal from alcoholism may be lethal & preventable. Describing the problem just as "addicted to alcohol" would not convey the seriousness of this disease.
