That may happen: Although herpes simplex virus, type 2 (hsv-2), affects the genitalia more often, you can get hsv-1 on the genitals. Genital hsv 1 tends to recur less often and be less severe than type 2. You would need further testing to see if the outbreak is type 1 or whether you have both type 1 and type 2.
