Can you please just explain to me what it means to have high liver enzymes?

Function compromised: The liver metabolized hundreds of metabolites in the body. If the liver is over-burdened, poisoned, infected, or replaced by tumor, it can result in elevation of liver enzymes (sgot, sgpt, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin). Something as simple as have 3 glasses of wine can cause elevation, but a hepatitis a is much more serious. The cause of elevation needs to be identified.
