See below: The brain is composed of white and gray matters. Gray matter is where the higher brain functions take place and the white matter usually transmits those functions. I believe you're refering to white matter changes seen on MRI or ct. These are nonspecific & may be seen with chronic small vessel changes from diabetes or hypertension or from multiple sclerosis or other problems.
