Blood borne virus: Hepatitis c is a virus that infects the liver and causes inflammation and scarring. Over many years, people can get severe scarring that leads to cirrhosis, liver failure or liver cancer. It is spread through contact with someone else's blood, even very small amounts, like sharing drug use works, rough sex, nonprofessional tattoos or piercings. Before 1992 many people got it from blood transfusion.
