Possibly: People with depression often have low drive & low energy. So they may chose to use their time engaging in an activity that is both non-demanding and distracting. In other words this may become somewhat of a crutch. Individuals with serious internet addictions often do this at the expense of relationships, physical health & emotional stimulation. This may or may not contribute to depressive state.
