How does s/he look?: The height of fever does not reliably distinguish between a viral and bacterial infection. If your child has fever for 3-4 days and is acting normally , playful, and still eating and drinking ok, then i would treat her fever when it makes her uncomfortable and observe. If she has decreased energy, is more cranky, is refusing to eat or drink, or worries you in other ways, see the doctor.

Fever: Viral infections do tend to be associated with higher fevers. Be reassured that fever is the body's way of fighting infection.
