Depends: It depends on what is causing the discomfort. If you have a lash or a foreign body (piece of metal) or a scratch it helps to keep the eye closed. If you have sensitivity to the bright lights and an ache, you may have iritis and would need steroids to break the attack before permanent scarring ensues. If it is sinusitis and aching, need to see general doctor or an ears/nose/throat doctor...
