Usually some left: Usually, only a portion of the intestine is removed when it is necessary. This means that the remaining intestine will compensate. If too much is removed, the patient may develop frequent loose stools and dehydration. Some patients require IV fluids or nutrition into the vein to stay alive. There are certain patients who qualify for intestine transplant which allows them to eat and drink again.
