Could you tell me what are hick-ups(or hiccups), what leads to them and how do you get rid of them?

Many reasons: Hiccups are intermittent contraction of your respiratory muscle called diaphragm. Any reason that causes irritation of the phrenic nerve( nerve that supplies diaphragm) and sometimes certain foods can cause it too. If they are persistent you will need to see your physician to rule our any serious causes of hiccups.
