A member asked:

Does 1 mg of ativan have the same effect as 1 mg of xanax (alprazolam)?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Usually NOT...: Although Ativan (lorazepam) and xanax (alprazolam) are in the same class of agents, pharmacologically, they have different "half-lives", the time it takes to metabolize them, and there is some evidence that they may have different affinity for certain benzodiazepine receptor subtypes. This is why one may work better for generalized anxiety while the other may work better for "panic" anxiety.
