A member asked:

A friend just had the cystic fibrosis gene mutation blood panel done for 23 most common plus 9 rare mutations of cf, 32 total, all negative. does this mean he is cf free and can safely have a child? i'm curious as to what these results actually mean?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

To have CF you must have a pair of gene mutations of one of the CF related genes, one gained from each parent. The gene mutations are misinformation that does not instruct the metabolism to make the proper factors that prevent the various forma of CF from mild to major. No evidence of any gene defect means no CF an no potential to pass it to their offspring.
