Syphilitic rash on dry skin -- like hands, arms, legs or trunk -- is rarely if ever contagious. However, if the rash involves moist areas -- the mouth, genital area, around the anus, etc -- these lesions are highly infectious. Contact with such moist lesions accounts for most sexual transmission of syphilis. There is no risk of syphilis from massage that does not include sexual contact.
