There is conflicting information. If you're taking a lower dose of 40 mg of doxycycline a day for rosacea or gum infections, take it at least 1 hour before food. So the lower dose is better without food. If you're taking a higher dose of 100 mg (like you) or more for other infections, you can take it with or without food. But you're less likely to feel stomach discomfort if you have with food.

Avoid antacids and dairy products in large amounts an hour or so before and after each dose of doxycycline; small amounts of dairy are OK (like cream in coffee). Otherwise food intake makes little difference in absorption and effectiveness of doxycycline. In fact, it's often recommended to take doxy with food it it causes nausea or abdominal discomfort on an empty stomach.
