Good question -- there's a lot of confusion on this. Influenza symptoms often include cough and nasal congestion, but acute HIV infection (acute retroviral syndrome, or ARS) does not. The "flu like" symptoms of ARS are fever, muscle aches, and generally feeling unwell, but not cough, stuffy nose, etc. Syphilis rarely causes any of these; its symptoms are not commonly called flu-like.
