This is one of many over the counter meds where we have no established guidelines for use. We are unlikely to see a funded study in the near future so most suggest you use as little as you can get by with. The 1,3 & 5mg forms are commonly available & as high as I would go based on the size/age of the kid.

If they are having difficulty sleeping. Discuss their bedtime routine with your Pediatrician. Quiet activity and reducing fluid intake two hours or less before bedtime is recommended.
