Heavy periods and pica (i.e. eating ice) may be signs of iron deficiency anemia. A complete blood count and iron studies can help determine that. There are also many causes of heavy periods. A detailed history, exam, lab work, and pelvic ultrasound can help determine the cause. Treatment such as NSAIDs and hormonal contraception can help control excessive bleeding
