Generally if an injury is mild, you should start to see relief within a few days. If it has been a week already and the pain is still fairly severe, you should go to the emergency room or to an urgent care to be evaluated. Good luck.

A spot X-Ray of the rib cage is indicated. We've all seen patients who sustained a rib fracture after an overly vigorous hug. It takes up to 12 weeks for some rib fractures to heal. Although there's no specific treatment at least you should know whether there's a fractured rib.
